Earned Ability vs. Access to Ability

AI is handing people skills they never built. That doesn't erase the value of the people who built them, it just changes what the value actually is.

The Line Is Getting Blurrier, Not Gone

AI is handing people skills and abilities they didn't have access to before. Someone who never learned to write clean code can now ship something that runs. Someone who never learned to draw can now generate something that looks finished. The obvious question is what that means for the people who actually spent years building the skill, versus the people now renting it by the prompt. The honest answer is that the line between earned ability and access to ability is getting blurrier, not erased.

The Edge That Doesn't Go Away

People who put in the years still have an edge, but the shape of that edge has changed. It used to be "I can do this task at all." Increasingly it's "I can judge whether the output is actually good, direct the tool toward what I actually need, refine what it hands back, and be responsible for the result when it matters." AI lowers the cost of producing work. It does not lower the value of taste, judgment, consistency, domain knowledge, or trust, and those were always the harder half of the skill anyway.

Amplifying Competence vs. Simulating It

For someone using AI honestly, on top of real skill, it's mostly a tools upgrade: they reach a higher ceiling faster than they would have alone. For someone using it to fake a skill they don't have, the short-term gain is real too, that's exactly why it's tempting. The long-term risk is just bigger, because reputation now depends less on producing the output and more on whether you can own it when the tool is gone, fails, or gets challenged in the room. The actual dividing line was never "AI users vs everyone else." It's people using AI to amplify real competence versus people using it to simulate competence they don't have. The first group compounds. The second group is building on borrowed ground, and borrowed ground gets called in eventually.

Thought Partner, Not Replacement

The difference usually comes down to one question you ask the tool: "think for me" or "help me find the gaps in my thinking." The first hands over judgment entirely and hopes the output is fine. The second keeps you as the architect, using the tool as a builder that works fast but doesn't know what you're actually trying to accomplish or why. You stay accountable for the outcome either way. Only one version of that relationship makes you sharper for having used it.

What Actually Gets Rewarded Now

Pure output used to be the thing that got rewarded. What's replacing it is a smaller, harder set of traits: judgment, knowing what good actually looks like when the tool can generate ten plausible-looking answers. Integrity, not quietly presenting a tool's output as the whole of your own capability. Adaptability, actually learning to work with powerful tools instead of either ignoring them or handing them the wheel. And proof of value, results you can point to and defend, not just claims about what you're capable of.

Subject-Matter Expertise Is the Multiplier

Expertise plus AI enhancement produces genuinely better output than either one alone, the same way a clean pure function is worth more than a clever one nobody trusts. Nothing but a series of prompts, with no underlying expertise steering it, produces something that looks like output but is really just slop and expense, a fast way to generate a mediocre result and pay for the privilege. The tool doesn't know the difference. You're the one who has to.

The Test You Don't Get to Skip

Here's the gut check: what are you without it, if the service goes down, the subscription lapses, or someone in the room asks you to explain the reasoning behind the result. If the honest answer is "not much," that's not a reason to panic, it's a reason to start closing the gap now, on purpose.
